Spooky Bats - Kids Craft

Attention all Librarians, Teachers, Moms anyone in need of a simple kids craft! Check out my spooky bats!

I had a lot of fun developing programs for this years Summer Reading Club with the theme, Dream Big - Read! There was a lot of fun different ways to interpret the theme. Since author/illustrator Brian Lies created the art work for the theme this year, I felt it necessary to use his book, Bats at the Library as inspiration for this kids craft! The book was also a great companion to the craft! With Halloween around the corner these bats make perfect decorations that your youngin's can help make!

Materials & Tools:
  • Bat Shape
  • Oak Tag (in both black and white)
  • Tissue paper (in black and purple)
  • Clothes pin
  • Crayons
  • Scissors
  • Glue
Instructions:

  • Create a bat body out of black oak tag
  • Cut out two circles out of white oak tag
  • Cut two pieces of tissue paper (black and purple) that measure 15 x 9 inches

  • Glue eyes to the bat body
  • Use your crayons to decorate and customize
  • Place your bat face down and get your clothes pin ready!
  • Dab some glue on the back of the bat body and attach the clothes pin

Back to School Display

Its that time of year, the kiddies are gearin' up to go back to school. Kids coming into the library get upset when they see our back to school books out, so this year I thought I might jazz up back to school with a display. I'm sure they will still be bummed that we are in the final days of summer and it won't make them any happier to see my display.. but at least I think its awesome. Maybe its also because for the first time in 18 years I don't have to worry about going back to school.

I had a bunch of left over paper towel rolls from back when I did my Star Wars program. I used them to make the pencil. Then I cut some in half to make the crayons. I was thrilled with how they came out and I loved how giant it looked. I kept on with the giant theme and make a big piece of loose leaf paper and a big ol' ruler.

Any of you getting in the back to school spirit?

Craft Date with Short Girl, Long Island

So do you have any friends on Facebook that you actually haven't met in person? I have a few and one of them was Michele from Short Girl, Long Island. She is a bit older than me but we hung around similar circles and she was always the friend of a friend but I had never actually met her! We also went to school with each others brothers, weird! (also that sounds like a pretty cool band name) So we decided to hang out and have a craft night. We have a lot in common and I have a feeling it was the first of many craft nights.

Michele brought over some stuff to make coasters. It was a fun craft that was simple and ended up looking great! Michele has a tutorial over on Short Girl, Long Island, so go check it out!

I dug around to look for some stationary to use for my coaster. I came across a bag I had saved from going to the Harry Potter exhibit. It was a cool bag that was worth saving (so don't judge me). The coaster does a good job, in my craft room I usually have some tea or coffee and now I have a coaster to rest my mug on so I don't risk ruining any projects! Here is my finished coaster!

I introduced Michele to the freezer paper stencil technique. I have referenced it a bunch of times before but have yet to post a tutorial and I promise you it is indeed coming! While doing it with Michele, I did some experimentation and make bug. After it had dried I took some sand paper to it and it came out looking distressed. What do you think?

House Tour!

After being in the house for about a month I feel confident in giving you all a tour of the place. The house is perfect and we don't have to renovate a thing. However it will still take some time for Tim and I to put our mark on it. For now we have settled quite nicely, so sit back and enjoy your tour.

I love the houses curb appeal and the two car garage is going to come in handy come winter time. The landscaping is also beautiful! I am a bit worried about the up keep though but I guess maintaining it will be an ongoing project. I am also excited to have a porch! That was one of the items on my wish list and lucky enough have one. I am having some fun figuring out how the porch is going to be decorated for holidays.

The main living space is open concept. This was another on the wish list. My first decorating project was the gallery wall located above the couch. Pay no attention to the fact that I havent changed out some of the pictures yet. The dinning room is huge! I was prepared to find an old junker table and turn it into a my dream farm house table. We went furniture shopping last week and we ended up finding that table on sale at a store. So we ended up ordering that. I love the bonus room. The previous owners called it 'the study'. Tim and I aren't as fancy so we are just calling it the reading room. We will eventually put some comfy chairs in here and it will be an ultimate chill zone. And luckily our giant expedite bookcase fit perfectly in the room.

The kitchen perhaps the best room. Tim is in his element here. There is so much storage that we have some cabinets that are still empty!

Guest rooms and guest bath. They are a good size and will be great for our future babies. (Don't get excited, I'm talking like in a few years)

Our master bedroom is a nice retreat. Its huge, has a walk in closet and a bathroom retreat on par with a luxury hotel. Yeah I know its amazing. I have no idea how we got so lucky.

When we moved in my mom, an accomplished gardener, went exploring in the backyard and picked a few cucumbers. To our surprise they had been maintaining the garden up until they left. So for the rest of the season I don't have to shop for tomatoes or cucumbers. Aside from perfect for gardening, the backyard is also a good space for entertaining. We have a nice pergola area and a hidden away fire pit area. In the fire pit area we saw that we have two fig trees! I have never had a fig before so I am looking forward to when these things grow a bit more.

The basement is also a good space. It is partially renovated and we'll turn it into a game room, home theater or whatever. Right now it just houses are crap we haven't unpacked. Also the previous owners didn't mess around. Not only did these people grow their own grapes and make their own wine, they had a big ass wine cellar as well.

Our three bottles of wine!

So with the new house I finally have more than a little tiny desk. I have an entire workspace! It was one of the things I was looking most forward to !

The previous owners grew wine grapes in the backyard and would brew their own wine. They had a room devoted to created wine making! Sadly I don't think we are going to keep up that tradition so the wine room has turned in to my work room! The space is perfect for it. It already has counter tops and some drawers. I have been taken some time putting everything in order. It is a bit scrambled right now becauseWhen we first moved in I just wanted to unpack boxes so I just shoved stuff in drawers. Now I have been taking the time to organize everything.

I am looking forward to many years of sewing and crafting in my little work room, as well as living in my house! Stayed turned for more exciting adventures of the nerd craft librarian!

Friday Night Sew In

A while back I came across this on the blogosphere, Friday Night Sew In, run by the blogs Handmade by Heidi and Crafty Vegas Mom. I thought it was a neat idea, its Friday leave me alone and let me work on stuff!

Its no secret that Halloween is one of my favorite times of year! This year I am so thrilled to be able to decorate the house! I have a few ideas already and thought since I had the time why not get some stuff done while I have some time.

Pinterest is chock full of decorating with bunting. For those not familiar bunting are the little flags on string. I decided to get some Halloween bunting going by using some burlap and the freezer paper stencil technique. It comes out looking pretty nice and can be used for other occasions, such as weddings.

Be sure to check back soon and I will have a tutorial posted!

Also if you want your kids to get in on the crafting action I made some bats. This was for a Summer Reading club program I did, Bats at the Library. I loved the bats and thought they were so cute (and easy to make) I decided to make a few for the house. Also they are made with a clothespin so you can clip any old place you want.

I will also have a tutorial for my bat friends. So check back later!

Summer Reading Club Craziness!

In the midst of my life altering crazy summer, would you have thought work would be a welcome distraction. Not so because it was just as crazy! Its the summer always means the Summer Reading Club. Sadly this week is the last week, but I wanted to share how I helped decorate the library.

I was really loving the theme this year, Dream Big Read! Visions of night time creatures and bed time sleepiness and the night sky immediately came to mind. So we tried to make the room look like a dream wonderland.

The table is always something in keeping with the theme. Last year for the travel theme, we made it a travel agency desk. This year I suggested making a bed frame and it came out really great! We always use foam board for a lot of decorations but the bed was pretty warped as the paint dried. So I am going to try and think of a possible solution for next year.

Does that window behind the bed look familiar? If you are a librarian or teacher you will know. Its from the bedtime classic, Good Night Moon. My department manager had asked that we incorporate the story in the decorations and this window was a good idea because it not only fits the theme and looks great, but it fills up a bunch of dead space. I also made some pin wheels featuring the title of the theme. I am never one for glitter but it gave the pin wheels some pizazz!

Morgan did some amazing stuff as well. She took over the children's room window. It looks out into the rest of the library. Her and other library aides have done some amazing stuff with it. This year I remember her being a little stumped as to what to make. I suggested constellations. She took that idea and ran with it and made this amazing display!

We were searching for some ideas and inspiration. We spend some time drooling over the amazing displays by Rachel Moani. Her displays are incredible and really inspired us. I was excited because this helped show us what library displays could be ! It goes way beyond the ol' " {insert-witty-pun}...with a good book" it gets old after a while. So check her stuff out! Morgan used her tutorial on creating a giant book with vine popping out of it. It covered up this ugly column that is always a design issue!

I also had to come up with an idea for my own display!  I actually had the idea for my display way back in March. I got some inspiration while searching Pinterest. I was looking for Dr. Suess quotes when I came across this one....

I loved it and thought it went well with our theme. I think I had also recently watched Hugo around then so I put the two things together and thought it would be great to use the iconic image from a Trip to the Moon.

First a did a sketch of my design, which I always do and its really helpful because I kept getting some more ideas from it!  I decided that the moon would be done on a piece of foam board cut out in the shape of the moon. The rocket would be a seperate piece of foam board giving it a 3 dimensional look. I was originally going to to paint my moon man a yellow color but while digging around the craft closet I found some old yellow cellophane and it looked great without having to paint it! The next step was putting it all together. The library already had starry gossamer so I hunt that up. Ann Marie hung him up and made the rocket pop out! Then I made a shooting star with the the first part of the quotation on it, then put the rest throughout the rest of the scene. Here is the finished product.

Now that its over we have to start coming up with some ideas for the fall and for my favorite time of year Halloween! I of course will keep you posted.

Home

This summer has been quite a whirlwind for me. I have been extremely lucky to have been able to check off plenty of things that were on my bucket list. One of the major items on that list was buying a house and it feels so amazing to say that my husband and I are homeowners. It has been a long process and moving is always a drag. We waited and saved up a bunch and we are so happy to be home.

Every since getting married there has been some pressure to buy a house. We heard it from every friend and family member, "Now is a great time to buy" and "interest rates are so low!" Well I was gonna take the next big step in my life when I was damn well ready. The thing that really freaked me out was the cost of a house. Not just the mortgage payment but fixing things that break, because its not a question of IF something breaks, its WHEN something breaks. So it took me about two years to get over that fear. In January I felt it was time so I found a real estate agent and Tim and I were on our search.

We saw a lot of interesting houses. Some horrible and some magnificent. Of course the magnificent homes were out of our price range and the horrible homes did not even have potential! Which is what we were looking for just potential! We even went to one house that was owned by hoarders. We passed on that one big time. Then in May we came across a listing online that was only up for about two days. It looked great based on the listing so we told our agent we need to see it ASAP! We were amazed by this place, everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) is done! The best part ? It was in our price range, actually towards the lower end! There really was no catch, the sellers are retiring and wanted to leave as soon as possible. We put our offer in on a Thursday night and continued to have the most nerve racking weekend of my life. We went through a bit of a bidding war but to our surprise we won, the house was ours!

We moved in at the end of July and are still getting ourselves settled. I am really pumped to start decorating. I started a few minor things and have had to restrain my self from purchasing too many house things, because now that I have a mortgage to pay we are on a budget. However now that I have a garage I have a space to experiment with D.I.Y. projects.

Last week I was excited to host our first guest, my little brother Billy! He is about to start his first semester at the University of Florida at Gainsville. I am so proud of him! While he was here we had some fun and he himself is not stranger to D.I.Y. In fact he is an accomplished knitter of mustaches and he has made his desk and a few other projects. So I called on his help for my first project! We are building a coffee table out of these crates and he helped me sand and stain them up. Aside from the coffee table we did some other little projects. I showed him the awesome power of the freezer paper stencil! He makes really cool star wars stencils but he does it the old fashioned way. We made this rebel alliance t-shirt. While going through my book of reference images he saw the shape of Long Island and asked me to make a patch for him.

As he was leaving he said how much his misses Long Island and that for him it would always be home. I thought it was a little interesting that I am in the midst of establishing my home while Billy's sense of home is scattered between Long Island, Florida and now school. Whatever the case he always has a place to crash when he is on the Island.

Sarina's Parisian Adventure Days 6, 7 & 8

Day 6

We woke up to another day of rain. And it was a Tuesday, the day almost every museum is closed! That is except the Muse D'orsay! So when we approached there was a big long line..in the rain. There were these guys selling umbrella and they kept Tim and I entertained because they just kept saying "umbrella-umbrella" really fast they sounded like the bad guys in Temple of Doom.
After we got in, the wait was certainly worth it. For those unfamiliar with the museum it is a converted train station and the building itself is just as magnificent as the art work it houses. We were very excited to take tons of pictures and then we were told no photography... boo! We did sneak in some picture taking while museum.

Cool eh? You can just picture a train going right down the center of instead of art work. There was amazing stuff here including Vincent Van Gogh's self portrait. The museum also houses one of the most impressive collections of impressionism.

When we made to the top of the museum it had some of the most amazing views of the city, framed within a clock.

After the museum we took our afternoon break. Afterwards we decided to check out a mall. Yeah Paris mall was a dumb idea, I felt so poor. It was ridiculously lush and we were so out of place. I was afraid to just touch anything! The trip to the mall wasn't a total bust because then we went to a super market and got some dinner. There was a lot of weird stuff there but we got some decent food.

This was our second to last day and we were pretty burnt out so we called it an early night and passed out.

Day 7

This was our last full day in Paris! So we had to make it count! We got up fairly early and we headed toward the Notre Dame. Even though we had seen the outside we haven't gone in so this was our chance. The inside of the Notre Dame is just as amazing and impressive as the outside. It was amazing and so massive. It was quite musty inside but then again this thing is around 800 years old. It certainly was amazing to think of all of the lives to walk in and out of this place the last few centuries, who else has gazed upon the amazing rose windows, who else has lit a candle by Joan of Arc's statue?

Afterwards we went to check out the bell tower situation. You can walk up and take a gander of the city from the same spot at Quasimoto. However it was quite a trek up stairs and we had already decided to do the catacombs that day so the tower was out.

The catacombs had quite a long wait but worth it. After getting in we took steps down and down and down underneath the city. I was starting to get freaked out. When we first entered there was some information about how the catacombs were originally a rock quarry. It had been abandoned for a certain number of years until it was seen as a solution to an overcrowding problem in the cities cemeteries.

We walked through the quarry section first. Even though there were no bones here I was freaked out! The pathways o the old quarry were closed off by gates. On the other side of the gate was just complete darkness and that scared the crap out of me! So when ever we came across one of those gates I made Tim walk in front of me. We saw some other neato things that reminded me of Indiana Jones big time. Feeling like a bad ass Indie ended quickly as soon as we came across some bones. That crap was so damn freaky because at some points it is so cramped and you are surrounded by bones on either side of you. There are signs that say don't touch remains but it was a hard not to graze and skull. At one point Tim touched one intentionally and it freaked me out! One thing that was also really weird about it are the people that work there. Every museum usually has some one sitting around making sure people aren't screwing around with items in the museum. The Catacombs had its own set of people that just sit there and hang out with these piles of bones...weird. I guess you are desensitized to it after a while.

After climbing up from the Catacombs we went over to Monmartre. We decided to meet up with another Discovery Walks tour and our guide ended up being Phillipe again! The tour met in front of the Moulin Rouge then proceeded up to one of the highest points in the city.

This neighborhood was the hangouts of Toulouse Lautrec, Picaso and Van Gogh. I was glad to see that the spirit of art is still alive in that street art is present every where and is embraced.

Momartre is on a hill so through out the tour we were making our way up the hill. At the end of the tour we ended up at the La Basilique du Sacre Coeur. Which I gotta say was pretty meh. Phillipe expressed is ultimate hate for that place also he pointed out that is very touristy. However across the street from the Basilica is some of the most amazing views of the city.

Momartre was also the neighborhood of Amelie! The dinner she worked at, Cafe 2 Moulins is right there! We went there for lunch and I was very giddy. They kept the restaurant really close to how it was in the movie, with the exception of the cigarette counter. The cafe was also cashing in on the fact that the movie took place there because pictures of Amelie are all over the place. Her face even graces the menu!

After getting some food in us we decided we went to see some more death so we headed over to one of Paris' most famous cemeteries, Pere Lachaise. We saw some interesting resting places. One of the cemeteries most famous residents, Jim Morrison was barricaded and a security guard was on standby. A tree nearby was full of graffiti with sayings like 'mojo rising' and 'the lizard king.' I thought that was pretty crazy until we came across Oscar Wilde. A glass barrier surrounds the giant flying angel statue. That barrier is covered in red lip stick kisses. A weird Frenchmen showing some people around gave my forehead a little smack and said "Kiss him!" then walked away. Yeah I didn't feel like catching some kind of gross disease from all of that lipstick built up so I did not kiss his statue.

After a crazy day of sooo much site seeing we headed back to chill out. However before leaving we had to sneak in one last belgium waffle!

Day 8: Travel (almost) nightmare

We woke up the next morning and to our surprise we saw it was 7:00 instead of 6:00 (which is when we needed to wake up) So we real quick scrambled to get ready and pack up. Tim was reassuring me that it was ok we had plenty of time and we had planned to leave early anyway. So we thought we had time. That was until we read the train schedule wrong and we really weren't sure where we were headed. We had to transfer and waited for what seemed like forever until we finally made it to the airport. Our boarding passes said "plane boards at 9:50" that was the exact time we reached the customs window. I was having serious stress and panic attacks! Luckily customs was quick. Immediately afterwards we ran so fast on one of those Jetson's conveyer belt things screaming "exusse" We made it to the gate severely out of breath when we read on the gate "Flight delayed" THANK GOD! So we caught our breathes and made our way home.
