The Best Thing Ever - Star Wars: Episode VII

When it was announced another Star Wars Trilogy was in the works this scruffy looking nerf herder was estatic! I'm not the only one excited and the rumors have been going around. This past week J.J. Abrams released this picture:

The cast was officially announced!!! It confirmed rumors and pleased many fans to hear that they are getting the gang back together. Luke, Leia, Han, Chewie, R2 and 3PO!

I'm also just as excited to hear about the people Star Wars newbs. Andy Serkis is going to be amazing. I hope plays some freaky motion capture alien creature. There is also a fair share of handsome men, Domnhall Gleeson (he will always be Bill Weasley to me) Oscar Issac and John Boyega (he was really awesome in Attack the Block)

Here is what else we know about the series:

  • It will take place 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi
  • This series will not be based on the 'Expanded Universe or anything that happened in Star Wars rebels
  • The film is set to be released in December 2015

Geek Pride Day!!!!

Hello there! As you know I wear my nerd flag pretty much everyday, but today is about being extra proud of nerdness because its Geek Pride Day!

I'll never forget the first time my older brother sat me down when I was little and said, "I'm going to show you this movie you should watch. It's called Star Wars." I've been in love with it ever since. Then  fast forward to Junior High when I saw a friend reading Harry Potter. "Pssh, what are you doing reading a kids book?" I teased her until she said "don't knock it until you read it." I called her bluff and not only fell in love with Harry Potter but reading as well. I love loving these things. There's something about fandom's that get you excited and makes you wish you could live in the fantastical world of your favorite characters. I'm proud of my Nerdness and I share it with you today!

I'm celebrating over at my Etsy shop. Enter the discount code GEEKPRIDE at check out and you will get 10% off any listing! The code expires next Saturday, so stock up!

I'm also celebrating by compiling a list of my favorite geek related things that have happened in recent history!

D n' Doin' it! Dungeons and Dragons

This is more of a personal geek milestone. A few months ago a group of friends and I began playing Dungeons and Dragons. After watching Game of Thrones and listening to Nerd Poker we decided to get our own thing going! Its a lot of fun and I can't believe I missed out on it when I was younger. We have a fun time playing, we gather around my dinning room table with some drinks and snacks, while playing epic soundtrack music in the background.

Double Doctors!

Who fans have been anticipating nothing but epic for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary. From last week's season finale we have a few ideas about the special, but of course its shrouded in mystery. I almost had a freak out though when it was announced that David Tenant (Doctor # 10) and Billie Piper (Rose Tyler) signed on. Moffat even teased whovians with this pic! I added some romantic flair to it. We have to wait till November for the big special but it will certainly be worth it!

Diagon Alley announced at the Wizarding World

In February I made my second pilgrimage to the Wizarding World at Universal Stuidos. I was super excited to see that on a bridge leaving Hogsmeded there was construction! Since the park opened there has been speculation of an expansion. It was recently officially announced that Diagon Alley is opening in 2014! I was thrilled because even though the Wizarding World is amazing, super detailed and is any Potter fan's fantasy, it needed Diagon Alley! (or as I like to call it Diganilly)

J.J. Abrams signs on to direct the new Star Wars Trilogy

When I saw the Star Trek reboot in 2009 I was blown away. I thought to myself, this is the reboot Star Wars needed and deserved, not those horrible things I will pretend don't exist. After Disney bought the rights to Star Wars I thought it was inevitable that a new trilogy would come out. I was curious to see who was going to do it and glad that its not George Lucas. I thought it definitely couldn't be Abrams, he was already invested in another franchise with 'Star' in the title. Then in a total surprise move, he announced that it's happening with him at the helm. This Star Wars fan mind was blown and super excited! Hopefully there isn't too much lens flare.

Sunday Snapshots

I have been taking a lot of pictures lately, I felt like I should share with you my week in pictures......

Last week Comedy Central premeired  Chris Hardwick's Standup special, Mandroid. Tim and I were lucky enough to score tickets back in February of last year. It was quite hilarious and I suggest you check it out.

Also last week I did an Owl themed storytime. I needed some owl finger puppets to go along with it.

My hair was getting pretty long. I was sporting a serious duck tail! I finally went to Bella Filia and got my hair chopped off. I feel like its shortest its ever been and I was a bit nervous as she was cutting. I always get nervous, but it always comes out great.

My friend Laura has been wanting to learn how to sew for a while. She mentioned that she wanted to take her Mom's old concert T-shirts (mostly Bruce Springstein) and turn them into a quilt. So we met up and I helped her create a game plan! Glad to say the quilt is in progress and should be ready for her Mom as a Christmas present.

Thanksgiving is in a few days. I am so excited to be not only hosting my first family holiday, but also having my Dad here! I have been preparing and decorating a bit. This subway art was on pinterest and I printed out a copy and it looks pretty fancy on my little mantle area. Here is the post if you would like to make one yourself!

Last week we hung out one night at my friend Tyler's. I have been friends with him since Kindergarten and we were even in a band together durring High School. We were called the Helicopters, he sang/played guitar while I played drums. It was a lot of fun and while I traded my drums in for a sewing machine, Tyler is still playing music. This was taken in his basement as a bunch of us were just randomly jamming with his stuff.

I had gotten this Star Wars wrapping paper from Louisa. While I was at their house I needed some wrapping paper to wrap a  present. Louisa has a box of wrapping stuff and this stuff was in there, unopened! She said I could keep it and I have been hanging on to it ever since. Its been a couple of years and I am in a moral dilema. I got my first Whimsey Box last week, in it were materials to make coasters. I am thinking about using the wrapping paper for it, but do I really want to open up the sacred wrapping paper?! I don't know! If you have any thoughts, please feel free to comment.

Star Wars in Manuscript (Meme for Monday)

Hello world and sorry that its Monday again. Here is your weekly dose of silly to help you prevent coming down with a case of the Mondays.

This weeks meme for Monday is some amazing art work by an amazing Thai illustrator, Chawakarn Khongprasert. It is a recreation of the greatest moments from Star Wars but done in the style of religious classical art. They are quite enjoyable and go check them out at XearsIII on Deviant Art

Star Wars Day!

Me and Morgan rocking some awesome star wars head gear!
Last Friday was May 4th...STAR WARS DAY! Last year at the library we did a book display for Star Wars day and it was so popular and I thought that'd make a great program! So let me take you through what the kiddies did!

I welcomed then into the room, while the Star Wars soundtrack was playing. (which stopped working during the program ugh!) Then we played a game of "Jedi Says". Its pretty much Simon says, but with fun things like - do the jedi mind trick, walk like C3PO, breath like Darth Vader and so on. Then I asked them some trivia questions. I tried not to make it too hard but they got all of them!

Then it was time to split them up and go to each of the stations that I set up: Yoda Ears & Princess Leia Hair, Light Sabers, Dark Side Battle & The Cantina.

Yoda Ears & Princess Leia Hair

While looking for craft ideas I did an image search of Star Wars stuff for some inspiration and it hit me! Yoda Ears! I took some green oak tag and made an ear shape, it was folded to face out then stapled them to an oak tag strap. I also put out some crayons for the kids to decorate their ears. I also wanted to factor in the girls that would sign up so I cut out some brown circles, decorated it then stabled it to the strap.

Light Sabers

I came across this craft on Family.com. I used their light saber template and collected tons upon tons of paper towel tubes. The kids decorated the templates then taped them to the paper towel tube. We then took a piece of construction paper, rolled it up then taped it to light saber. The kids had serious fun with this some kids even made double light sabers!
I would recommend to use a heavy card stock and not construction paper. It just isn't that durable and the kids wanted to do some serious light saber dueling. So I had to deal with broken light sabers all afternoon. A few times the kids got crazy with the light sabers so I told kids to meditate like Jedi's.

Dark Side Battle

I printed out some pictures of Star Wars baddies on card stock. I taped them up to stand up then gave the kids some rubber bands to flick at the bad guys.

The Cantina

One thing that is needed for any successful kids program is food! Luckily I already had the Star Wars cookie cutters from William Sonoma. So the night before I baked those bad boys up. I also made some royal icing in different colors, the kids then got to decorate their cookies. I also wanted to accommodate kids that have food allergies, so I gave them a pretzel rod which they could decorate with frosting, to make a 'light saber'. They were also given some Yoda Soda. It is just seltzer and lime sherbert. And it was really good!

It was sooo much work but worth it. The kids had a great time and kept asking when we were going to have this program again. This will most likely turn into a May 4th tradition. Also a very special thanks to Morgan Brett who helped me with the program! She is also took these great pictures!

Loose ends & an iPad

I took the time this past week to finish some projects. And here are the results!

My friend Joe asked me to make him a scarf. Unfortunately it is now spring and the end of scarf weather..but at least he has it for next year. One side has the Star Wars rebel alliance and the other is the empire. So he can decide if he wants to be good or evil.

Another request came from my Aunt Sharlene (we call her Doe doe). She is a big Grateful Dead fan so I put one of the dancing teddy bears on it. She also asked me to make a snack bag for her. As you can see a sandwich fits quite nicely in there.

While I was finishing that stuff on a lovely Friday afternoon I was patiently awaiting a delivery...my new iPad! It is super fantastic I must say. I have some comics on there to, but right now I am reading Game of Thrones (SOOO GOOD). As you can see I have made a nifty case for it. I wasn't sure what else to put on it so I went for the Rebel Alliance. I am also currently working on one for my co-worker Erin (she also got one of the new ones)

Some of my favorite apps so far are FlipBoard. It turns all of your RSS feeds into a nice magazine format. I am also enjoying Temple Run, even though I stink at it :( I have been getting ready for Paris and practicing my French with the Mango Languages app. (psst.. Mango is free with your library card if you didn't know) I have also gotten an app for my thesis research which include: Alice in New York, U-Ventures (free app score!) and my personal favorite, the Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore. It was based on a short film which won the Oscar for best animated short. If you haven't seen it here it is!

on that note I leave you for now, SALUT!
